Description of the sight

The unique house with chimeras, designed by the architect Vladislav Gorodetsky in the Art Nouveau style, is located in the center of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, on Bankova Street. Built in 1902-1903, the house was designed in the shape of a cube, it has three floors from the side of Bankova Street, and six floors from the side of Ivan Franko Street. The house was built using technologies unique for those times: for the first time, piles were used for the foundation, and a new material, cement, was used in the construction. The exterior decoration of the house reflects the love of its creator for hunting. The facade is decorated with magnificent sculptures made by the famous sculptor Elio Sala. The sculptures depict girls riding fish, rhinos, antelopes, crocodiles, huge toads, eagles, lizards, dolphins. Elephant trunks serve as drains when it rains. The interior of the house is striking in its luxury. Here you can see marble stairs, gypsum ceiling moldings in the form of an octopus, walls decorated with paintings depicting the wonders of the underwater world, as well as a stove decorated with ceramic tiles, various hunting trophies, a unique elk horn chandelier and many other interesting decorative elements.
