Description of the sight

The Uzhgorod Orthodox Synagogue now serves as a philharmonic society and is the main concert hall of the city. The building was built in 1904 in a neo-Moorish style, rare for the region. Initially, the building had a rich external decoration, but after the placement of the Philharmonic, it was lost. The synagogue was built with the money of the Jewish community on the banks of the river Uzh. Since the site was not developed, there was no need to be tied to a specific architectural style. Therefore, the synagogue was built in the then fashionable neo-Moorish style. During the construction, expensive materials were used - the building's basement was made of pink marble, the walls were lined with decorative ceramic tiles, the windows were decorated with artificial marble. The main part of the facade was a balcony with a Star of David inscribed in a circle. The roof was richly decorated with various figures and ornaments made of clay and copper. Today, most of the decor has not survived, you can see only the remains of its former beauty.
