Description of the sight
Profitable house of the All-Russian insurance company "Russia" is one of the most famous architectural sights of Kharkov. It was erected in 1916 according to the design decision of the outstanding architect I. Pretro. This is one of the profitable houses, where commercial and residential premises were combined. It is a majestic 6-storey building with three courtyards, which is a bright representative of neoclassicism. On the first floor there were shops, on the other - spacious apartments. There is a trapezoid at the base of the structure, therefore, along with the front ones, it had two “inner” buildings, which led to the appearance of three courtyards - the central one with access to the Constitution Square and two deaf outer ones. The residential premises of the upper floors of the Profitable House of the All-Russian Insurance Company "Russia" received a corridor-sectional layout. In general, the architectural structure is quite restrained. Only in the center of the house there is a large arch leading to the inner space surrounded by shops. On both sides of it, the plasticity of the structure is reinforced by a sculptural composition.
