Description of the sight
The main operating Orthodox church in Vinnitsa, a unique monument of baroque architecture. It was built in the 18th century as a Dominican church, but in 1832 it was abolished and transferred to the jurisdiction of the Orthodox clergy. The history of the temple is inextricably linked with the name of the Bratslav judge and philanthropist Mikhail Grokholsky, who restored it with his own money from 1758 to 1760. Subsequently, the tomb of the Groholsky family was equipped here, which was carefully preserved even after the transfer of the church to Orthodoxy. The cathedral was visited by distinguished guests more than once: Nicholas I with his sons Alexander and Nicholas, later Simon Petliura and Jozef Pilsudski visited it. The well-known Ukrainian writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky received the sacrament of baptism and wedding in the temple. With the advent of Soviet power, hard times came for the Transfiguration Cathedral. All valuables were removed from it, and the building was given over to a rubber warehouse. Then it housed a gym, and even later - an organ music hall. Only in 1990 the cathedral was again transferred to the full disposal of the church.
