Description of the sight

Kharkiv kenassa is an architectural monument of the late 19th century, a religious building of the Karaites. Initially, it appeared in the former house of the Izmailovs in 1853, and in 1873 the prayer house of the Karaites was approved by the government. The modern kenassa was laid on August 18, 1891. The building was designed by the famous architect B. S. Pokrovsky. Its solemn consecration took place on November 24, 1893. In 1929, the Soviet government dissolved the Karaite community, and a club-museum called “The Militant Atheist” was located in the building of the kenassa. Later, the building housed a transport organization. In Soviet times, the appearance of the Kharkiv kenesa underwent some changes: the interior space was divided into two floors, in connection with which the shape of the windows changed, the Tablets of the Covenant that adorned the cornice and the fence around the building disappeared. Baroque features are visible in the Kharkiv kenasse. The façade is decorated with a row of Doric columns, and massive stucco details are placed under the roof.
