Description of the sight
The Botanical Garden named after academician Alexander Fomin is located on the banks of the Lybid River near the building of the Kyiv National University. The garden was designed by architect Vincent Beretti, who built the main university building. The first trees were planted by Academician Trautfetter in 1839. Even at the design stage, it was assumed that the Botanical Garden would become not only a center of scientific thought, but also a place of rest and leisure for citizens. Therefore, the layout of its park area is unusually picturesque. Initially, plants of the northern hemisphere were presented in the garden, capable of surviving the Kyiv winter in the open field. But already in the middle of the 19th century, greenhouses for tropical plants were arranged in the garden. The garden is named after one of its directors, Alexander Fomin, who, at the cost of incredible efforts, saved the garden from freezing during the civil war. Today, the collections of the Botanical Garden include almost ten thousand species of plants. The garden is divided into two zones: park and scientific. Entrance to the park is free, the collections of the scientific zone can be viewed with a guide.
