Description of the sight
Synagogue "Kornshil" in Chernivtsi was built in the late 19th century in honor of the Mordko and Taubi Korn family in the neo-Roman style. The synagogue functioned until the outbreak of World War II. In 1946, it was closed, and its premises were used for more than 50 years for other purposes. The building has been repeatedly rebuilt, the internal layout has been changed. In 2008, the building of the synagogue was returned to the Jewish community, and restoration of the building began. In the process of repair and restoration work, the building collapsed, only part of the facade was preserved. Therefore, the synagogue was almost completely rebuilt. The reconstruction was carried out mainly at the expense of the former resident of Chernivtsi Aaron Mayberg. Therefore, the revived synagogue was named after Israel and Zelda Maiberg. A mikvah was rebuilt in the synagogue, rooms were prepared for classes where Torah studies will take place, for a shop for kosher products and Jewish subjects, and for a kosher cafe. At the synagogue there is a kindergarten "Khaya Mushka", a cultural Jewish center "Chabad". In 2011, on September 25 and October 23, two Torah scrolls were solemnly brought into the newly opened synagogue.
