The temple, which later became the main one in the city and the principality, was founded by Prince Mstislav Vladimirovich around 1030-34. The legendary prince Igor Seversky, as well as Igor Chernigov and other historical figures are buried here. The cathedral, rebuilt after a fire in the mid-18th century, has survived quite well to this day. The facade of the five-domed eight-pillared temple is lined with elegant brickwork and decorated with pilasters. The interior of the cathedral is distinguished by severity and solemnity. The remains of frescoes, columns, carved floor slabs, and choirs speak of its rich decoration. This valuable example of the Byzantine-Kyiv school of architecture of the 1st half of the 11th century played an important role in the development of temple construction in the pre-Mongol era.
