Description of the sight

The memorial complex "Drobitsky Yar" in Kharkov is a monument to the victims of fascism. With the occupation of the city on October 24, 1941, the policy of intimidation by the Nazi authorities began. In order for the townspeople to behave calmly, on October 25, more than a hundred civilians were hanged with signs "saboteur", "partisan" and "thief". The place for the erection of a memorial to the memory of the victims in the Kharkiv region was not chosen by chance. Here, from mid-December 1941 to early February 1942, more than 15,000 Kharkiv residents, mostly Jews, were shot. A small obelisk was erected on the site of these events in 1955, and in the 1990s, after the creation of the Kharkov organizing committee "Drobitsky Yar", it was decided to erect a Memorial in Drobitsky Yar. In December 2002, the memorial complex was opened. Now, on the outskirts of the city, not far from Rogan, one can see an obelisk with a menorah standing next to it - the “tree of life”. At the very entrance to the complex there is a remarkable inscription - "This is the place where the dead teach the living."
