Description of the sight

The Lyadsky Gate is the southern gate of ancient Kyiv, located on the site of the modern Independence Square. Wooden gates led to the princely part of the city, also known as the Old Town. Mentioned in the annals of 1151 as a gate leading to the "land of the Pechenegs". Also, through the Lyadsky Gates, the path to the Caves Monastery and Klov passed. It was here that on December 4, 1240, the army of Batu Khan, during the siege of Kyiv, was able to make a breach in the city fortifications and break into Kyiv. The ruins of the gate were completely destroyed during the reconstruction of Independence Square (so that they would not interfere with the construction of Globus stores). Subsequently, they were recreated in 2001 (in a different place and in a different form). Initially, the gate was deeper and closer to the House of Trade Unions.
