Description of the sight

A monument to the Ukrainian poet Taras Grigoryevich Shevchenko was erected on Svobody Avenue in Lviv. The decision to build it was made on June 22, 1987. And the next year, a competition was announced for the best design of the monument. He did not confirm the expected results. Almost out of 40 works, the jury could not choose a single one. The republican competition held the following year had the same results. Despite this, the Lviv city executive committee signed an agreement with the sculptors Sukhorsky to make the monument. During these times, the formation of Ukraine as an independent state was taking place. Despite the ongoing crisis and lack of funds, the monument was completed with the support of the Ukrainian diaspora. After the construction, its grand opening took place on August 24, 1992, just on the anniversary of the creation of the declaration of independence of Ukraine. Its height is 4.45 meters, on the left side of the poet is the bronze stele "The Wave of National Revival", completed in 1995. Its height is 12 meters, and the surface has a relief texture.
