Description of the sight

In 1818, an event of exceptional importance took place in the cultural life of young Odessa - the opening of the Richelieu Lyceum. Many famous people visited there: A.S. Pushkin, Dr. Arendt, Gogol, Adam Mickiewicz, Nicholas I and Count Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov. Then the lyceum was located in the now preserved long two-story buildings. Its construction finally formed a complex of buildings, to which house No. 14 was later attached, stretching from Deribasovskaya to Lanzheronovskaya, along the entire length of the block. Now this house is referred to as the Wagner House. The fact is that soon the lyceum moved to a new building at Dvoryanskaya, 2. In connection with this, an exchange was made: the old lyceum buildings were given to the Odessa merchant William Wagner, and he, in turn, presented the lyceum with his hotel "European". Having acquired this house, the new owner moved his "English shop" to a new location. Despite the name, you could buy a variety of goods there, and not only from England. It was absolutely impossible to compete with this well-known entrepreneur throughout Odessa. The shop flourished. And only time could stop the activities of the Wagner house, forever making it a part of history.
