Description of the sight
A memorial sign to the repressed kobza players, bandura players, lyre players was installed in the garden named after T. G. Shevchenko, not far from the opera and ballet of Kharkov, on October 14, 1997. The authors of the monument were sculptors: V. Bondar, V. Semenyuk, O. Shaulis and architect O. Morus. This monument was erected to commemorate the musicians killed by the Soviets in the 1930s. The number of those who died in those days, according to some estimates, reaches about 300 musicians. The commemorative monument is a granite monolith engraved with a mutilated kobza and the words: “In memory of the persecuted kobzars”. The monument was erected and created with donations from the population of the city, following the initiative of the Youth Union of Kharkov. The opening of the monument was timed to the All-Ukrainian review of authentic musical instruments in the city.
