Description of the sight
The city of Nizhyn is located in the Chernihiv region, on the picturesque bank of the Oster River. The city was first mentioned in the 11th century - in the Tale of Bygone Years. But this area was inhabited much earlier, as evidenced by the ancient settlement discovered during archaeological excavations. The city has a rich and heroic history. It is an important transport hub and an ancient cultural center. In Nizhyn there are monuments to Gogol, Shevchenko, Lenin who died during the Great Patriotic War, as well as in the battles in Afghanistan to the victims of political repressions, the Holodomor, Chernobyl. It will be interesting for tourists to look at the tank installed in honor of Major Haitovich and the monument to the Nezhin cucumber. The names of prominent historical figures are associated with Nizhyn: navigator Yuri Lisyansky, writer Nikolai Gogol, actor Mark Bernes and other celebrities.
