Description of the sight
The Chernigov Collegium was founded in 1700 by Archbishop John in Chernigov. Collegium is the first institution of higher education located in Left-bank Ukraine. It was built in the Baroque style with the money of Ivan Mazepa. At first, there were four classes in the collegium, where they taught grammar, Latin rhetoric and poetics, as well as syntax in Polish and Latin. Later, a philosophical class was opened in the collegium, and they also began to teach many languages (German, French, Greek). The institution taught children of the clergy, nobles, Cossacks and townspeople in Old Slavonic, Polish and Latin. In 1786, the collegium was reorganized into a theological seminary. Seminary workers published their scientific work in the journals "Faith and Life" and "Chernigov Diocesan News".
