Description of the sight

The monument to Taras Grigoryevich Shevchenko in the city of Kharkov is a monument to the Ukrainian thinker, poet, artist and writer. The building is located in the center of Kharkov, in the garden named after T.G. Shevchenko, at the entrance to the central alley from Sumskaya street. The monument is combined with the park landscape and the architectural ensemble of the city. The total height of the monument exceeds 16 meters, and the height of the statue itself is 4.5 meters. The artistic style of the building can be attributed to socialist realism and Stalinist baroque. The authors of the monument are the architect Iosif Langbard and the Soviet sculptor Matvey Manizer. The grand opening of the monument took place on March 24, 1935, 9 months after Kharkov ceased to be the capital of Ukraine. Since then, the monument has been one of the main symbols of Kharkov.
