Description of the sight
The monument was erected in 1991. Sandor Petofi (1823-1849) is one of the greatest poets of Hungary. He visited Berehove in 1847 when he was on his way to his wedding in Transylvania. The monument depicts that moment in Petofi's life when, walking near the Gothic Roman Catholic Cathedral, he said in astonishment the following words: "Beregsas is a simple small town, but what a big Gothic church it has!". First, the architect placed the sculpture on a small hill, so that the feeling of the poet's closeness was stronger. One night the sculpture was damaged, the right arm was broken. It was restored, but the seam on the arm reminds of this. After this incident, the monument was placed on a stone pedestal.
