Description of the sight
A monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa was erected in Chernihiv. The attitude to this historical figure is still very twofold. Someone considers him a traitor, and someone - a fighter for the independence of Ukraine. Back in 1998, the sculptor Gennady Yershov made a bronze bust of the Ukrainian hetman at the expense of patrons. He depicted Mazepa pressing a mace to his chest. It is a symbol of the hetman's struggle for independence. However, the monument was erected only in 2009. The initiative came from the National Architectural and Historical Reserve "Ancient Chernihiv". The place for installation was the building of the local collegium, which is one of the oldest educational institutions in the country. The architect of the project was Volodymyr Pavlenko, Honored Architect of Ukraine, Head of the Urban Planning and Architecture Department of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration. The monument was consecrated by Bishop of Chernigov and Nizhyn Hilarion of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate.
