Description of the sight

Monastyrsky Island is an island on the Dnieper in the city of Dnepropetrovsk. The name of the island changed several times - in the 19th century - Burakovsky and Bogomolovsky, and since 1926 - Komsomolsky. Geographically, the island belongs to the Central Park of Culture and Leisure named after T.G. Shevchenko. The island is connected to the city by a cable car and a footbridge. In 1958, a monument to Taras Grigoryevich Shevchenko was erected on the island - one of the largest monuments in the country. In 1999, an Orthodox church of St. Nicholas was built in the northern part of the island. The first mention of this island is found in the Slavic chronicles dated to the end of the first millennium. History has secured the glory of the cradle of Russian Christianity for the island.
