Description of the sight
Mikhailovskaya Square, one of the oldest places in Kyiv, has existed since the 12th century. First of all, this is a platform in front of St. Michael's Cathedral, dedicated to the heavenly patron of Kyiv - the Archangel Michael. It is believed that it was from this cathedral in Russia that the tradition of temples with gilded tops began. After the explosion under Soviet rule, the building was restored to its original form. A monument to Princess Olga is erected on the square. The composition also includes the figures of the Apostle Andrew the Primordial and the holy enlighteners Cyril and Methodius. Near the monument, you can often see newlyweds, among whom it has become a tradition to bring a bouquet here. Near the Mikhailovsky Monastery there is also a monument to the victims of the Holodomor - a cross with a crucified figure of a woman inside. Nearby is a great place for walking - the park "Vladimirskaya Gorka". Together with Sofievskaya, Mikhailovskaya Square constitute a kind of historical "reference point". This place is impossible to miss when visiting Kyiv.
