Description of the sight
Rosa Luxembourg Square is one of the most popular places in Kharkov. It starts from Constitution Square, intersects with Universitetskaya Street in the middle and ends with Proletarskaya Square in the west. The square was founded at the end of the 17th century. There was a city bazaar on it, and the Uspenskaya and Pokrovskaya fairs were also held. In the southeast corner of the square there was a post office, and next to it there was a milestone. In the 19th century Rosa Luxembourg Square was built up with one-story and two-story commercial buildings. From the 1830s, the square began to be called Pavlovskaya, in honor of the merchant Pavlov's house that appeared on it. In 1868-1874, the Maly Theater was located here, a little later the luxurious Grand Hotel was opened in it. In 1905, 1917 and 1919, meetings and demonstrations were held on the square. In the winter of 1919, the square received its current name. Currently, among the main attractions of the square, one can note: the Central Department Store, the House with a Spire, the Nine-Story Residential Building No. 5, and the Residential Building No. 4 with a post office, also known as the Peasant House. In 2013, the square was renamed Pavlovskaya.
