The church is located in the very center of the city, on Castle Square. You can get here by trolleybuses No. 1 and No. 3, as well as minibus No. 58 from the railway station.
Description of the sight
In the 11th-18th centuries, on the top of the Castle Hill, there was a wooden castle, later rebuilt into a stone one. Until our time, only the remains of the ramparts of the stone castle have been preserved. It was on this spot that the Cathedral of St. Sophia, built on the initiative of Bishop S. Ozhiga in 1743-1746. In the 19th century, during the reconstruction of the church, the methods of classicism were used. The architectural style of the building belongs to the late Renaissance with baroque elements. Today it is a functioning temple. Nearby rises the bell tower, dating from 1863 and reaching a height of 26 meters. The church has a commemorative plaque in memory of the Polish pianist and composer Juliusz Zarembski.
