Description of the sight
Kyiv Holy Ascension Florovsky Convent is located at the foot of the Castle Hill in Kiev Podil. The monastery existed as early as the 16th century, but its true history began in 1711, when, by decree of Peter I, the richest Ascension Monastery was attached to the modest Florovsky Monastery. With the acquisition of a new status in the Florovsky Monastery, stone construction begins. The Ascension Cathedral Church, a refectory, cells for nuns are being built. There is a garden on the territory of the monastery. Unfortunately, almost all buildings perish in the terrible Kiev fire of 1811. The main architect of Kyiv, Andrey Ivanovich Melensky, is engaged in the restoration of the monastery after the fire. Carefully preserving the few that survived the fire, he erects a new architectural ensemble of the Florovsky Monastery. To the newly rebuilt Ascension Cathedral Church, the Church of Our Lady of Kazan, the Resurrection Church, the refectory Tikhvin and the cemetery Holy Trinity Churches (the latter was destroyed during the Soviet era), many household buildings are added. Today, 230 sisters live in the Florovsky Monastery. Services are held in the Ascension Cathedral, restoration work is underway in other temples.
