Description of the sight
Klochkovskaya street is one of the main thoroughfares of Kharkov. It starts from Proletarskaya Square, extends to the Okruzhnaya Road, where it turns into the T-2103 highway towards the Russian-Ukrainian border, near Kazachya Lopan. Klochkovskaya street crosses the Dzerzhinsky district from south to north. Its length is 8 kilometers, and the width of the carriageway varies from 12 to 30 meters. In 1824, fish shops opened on Klochkovskaya Street, and in 1909 a tram line was built here. Large-scale planning work on building up the street began in 1924. On the site of a wasteland cut by a deep ravine, a Klochkovsky congress was arranged. Part of the street adjacent to the Pokrovsky Cathedral remained undeveloped for a long time because of the swamp. Only from the middle of the 19th century did houses appear there. In 1956, a magnificent cascade staircase was built on the slope of the Shevchenko Garden. In 1959, the carriageway of the street was widened. Currently, the main local attractions include the Small Cascade, the Book and Flea Market, Pine Hill, the Shevchenko City Garden, Alexy's Temple and the Roman Catholic Church.
