Description of the sight

Prospekt Gagarin is the main thoroughfare of Kharkiv, which connects the city center with the airport. The street was formed at the end of the 17th century and was called Zmievskaya. At the beginning of the 19th century, Gagarin Avenue reached the current Molchanovsky Lane and ended in a stone house with a huge orchard. In the 1860s, the street continued to be built up and reached Molochnaya Street. In 1876, Gagarin Avenue was paved and became part of the highway to Zmiev. In the pre-revolutionary period, the street was built up very slowly. In Soviet times, Gagarin Avenue became the concentration of a number of industrial enterprises - a jewelry and hosiery factory, the Office Equipment plant and a road machinery plant appeared here. On the basis of the former slaughterhouses, a meat processing plant was created. In 1929-1930, Osnova Airport was built on the southern outskirts of Kharkov, not far from Zmievskaya Street. At present, Gagarin Avenue attractions include the Cogwheel Monument, the Monument to Yuri Gagarin in a spacesuit, Kharkiv-Levada Station, the Central Bus Station Building and the Flower Clock.
