Description of the sight

Borisoglebsky Cathedral is located in the Ukrainian city of Chernihiv. The cathedral, built in 1120-1123 on the foundation of an older stone building of the 11th century, was originally conceived as a house church and a tomb for the sons of Grand Duke Vladimir Boris and Gleb, who were killed on the orders of their brother Svyatopolk the "Cursed" during civil strife. By type, the Borisoglebsky Cathedral is a cross-domed, one-topped, six-pillared. The cathedral has almost completely preserved the features of the architecture of the XII century. The cathedral was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, each time its architecture changed. It was restored in the 13th century after the Mongol-Tatar invasion, significantly rebuilt in the 17th century, and suffered during the Second World War. In the 20th century, under the guidance of the outstanding restorer and archaeologist N. Khristenko, the church was restored and restored to its ancient Russian appearance. Almost no ancient frescoes have been preserved in the interior, but the floor inlaid with mosaics and majolica tiles has been restored. In the cathedral you can also see the gilded silver royal gates of the 18th century. Since 1972, the Museum of Architecture has been functioning in the premises of the temple, which is part of the National Architectural and Historical Reserve "Ancient Chernihiv".
