Description of the sight
The Governor's Palace is an architectural monument of the 18th century in the city of Kharkov. Currently, the building is the main building of the Ukrainian Engineering and Pedagogical Academy. Throughout its history, it also served as the main building of the Imperial University of Kharkov. The governor's house was built by order of Catherine II in 1770-1777. Initially, the project of the Moscow architect M. Tikhmenev was implemented by the city architect I.M. Vilyanov, and later - P.A. Yaroslavsky. The style of the building is a transitional form from baroque to classicism. The facade is decorated with fluted Ionic pilasters. On both sides of the building there are symmetrical arched entrances in the form of triumphal arches. The central building is taller than the wings and decorated more richly. Memorial plaques are fixed on the building in memory of I.I. Mechnikov and about the participation of Kharkov students in the battles at the barricades in October 1905.
