Description of the sight

Kiev-Pechersk Lavra is one of the most ancient monasteries on the territory of Russia. Lavra is located on the territory of modern Ukraine, in the center of Kyiv. The monastery is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Kiev-Pechersk Lavra was founded in 1051 by the monk Anthony of the Caves from the city of Lyubech under the auspices of the Grand Duke of Kyiv Yaroslav the Wise. The monastery had a difficult history - many times the Polovtsians and Berendeys burned the Lavra during their invasions, and the monastery was also destroyed during the countless wars waged by Kievan Rus. However, each time the Lavra was invariably restored. Now the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra is the most famous and popular attraction in Kyiv. On its territory there are several dozens of local attractions - medieval churches, bell towers, chapels, ancient monastic cells, the remains of ancient gates and fortifications. Also, a complex of underground caves is available for tourists, where the relics of numerous saints and simply famous personalities are buried. In addition, you can visit the local museum, which displays an extensive collection of ancient religious objects, paintings and books. Kiev-Pechersk Lavra is a unique historical monument and the central attraction of all tourist excursions in Kyiv.
